Federer vs Nadal Australian Open 2018
Roger Federer, 17-time Grand Slam winner, was the dominant force in international men’s tennis in the latter part of the last decade. His chief challenger for much of the time was Rafael Nadal, the younger Spaniard, who had a penchant for doing well on clay. They first encountered each other in the third round of the Miami Masters in 2004, where Rafa’s unexpected victory signaled that he would be the chief rival of Roger’s in the years to come.

Nadal’s victory against Federer at the French Open Final of 2006 ensured him his second Grand Slam. Generally, every match on clay between the two on clay has seen Nadal win. And its not really a surprise, given the general extent of the Spaniard’s dominance on clay-with 9 of his 14 Grand Slams having come on clay.
In 2006, the pair again faced off at the Wimbledon Final, where Federer held his nerve to beat his esteemed junior opponent.

2007 also proved to be a closely fought year for the pair, with Federer winning three of the five encounters which the pair had that year. Federer’s victory over Nadal at the Hamburg Masters was his first victory over his rival, which also brought an end to Nadal’s awe-inspiring 81-match unbeaten winning streak on clay. Federer also beat Nadal at the Wimbledon Final that year, the first of their many epic encounters on grass, a rivalry which would assume historic proportions soon. Federer won the epic 5-setter 7-6(9-7), 4-6, 7-6(7-3), 2-6, 6-2. But the scenario would be reversed at the 2008 Wimbledon final, with Rafa notching up his first Grand Slam on a non-clay surface(this being grass). In 2008, Nadal won all his four encounters against Roger, extending his streak to 12-6, and according to many, had turned a corner, and began to be acclaimed as a player of great renown.

If Federer won the Madrid Masters final against Nadal, shocking him in front of the Spanish crowd, and ending his 33-match unbeaten streak on clay, Nadal beat Federer in the final of the 2011 French Open, winning his 10th Grand Slam, a monumental feat for a player who had come to represent the best of what Spanish tennis had to offer.

The rise of Serbian star Novak Djokovic did add an extra factor to what was a riveting rivalry; Nadal leads Djokovic 23-22, but since 2011, the Serb has had the upper hand, winning all his 6 encounters against Nadal that year, and having notched up further successes since, with his 2015 victory in the French Open against the Spaniard being his first of the tournament against the clay master.
